Overview
The HSSC English Language syllabus is designed, to fulfil the academic and employment linguistic needs of learners wishing to either pursue higher education, or enter the workforce. The syllabus is multidimensional and incorporates all components of the English language, i.e., phonology, grammar, lexis, discourse, and language functions and skills. Candidates learn to acquire information and ideas through reading and listening, and to effectively communicate their ideas through writing and speaking. The syllabus emphasizes the understanding and use of the English language in different academic and social contexts.

Learning Objectives
The HSSC English Language syllabus enables candidates to:
  • Discover and understand a variety of text types through tasks which require multiple reading and thinking strategies for comprehension, fluency, and enjoyment
  • Read and analyse literary texts to seek information and ideas that they can relate to their own experiences
  • Produce written work that is articulate, accurate, academic, focused, purposeful, and organized
  • Use appropriate social and academic conventions of spoken discourse for effective oral communication with individuals and groups, in both informal and formal settings
  • Understand and articulate widely acceptable pronunciation, stress and intonation patterns of the English language for improved communication
  • Improve their vocabulary for effective communication
  • Use the principles of grammar, punctuation, and syntax for developing accuracy in their spoken and written communication
